Thoughts, Comments, and Recommendations

There is nothing quite like a new book, and I am ALWAYS on the hunt for my next new favorite! So, I thought I’d share a few recent books I’ve read just incase you too are on the lookout for something new. Also, this is a two way street, so I’m fully expecting to hear what you are reading and loving in the comments below, so don’t by shy! Okay, here we go…

The War of Art

OMG, if you are a creative of any kind. READ THIS BOOK. Seriously. Read it, you can write me a thank you note later.

Talking as Fast as I Can

Well, I just loved this book. Like really loved it. The start was slow, and I almost put it down and never picked it back up, but I powered through and about 1/3 of the way in it got really great! Also, I’m a huge Gilmore Girls fan. Of course, I loved all the the behind the scenes details of filming GG and the sweet things about the town we all love, Stars Hallow. I didn’t want this book to end!

Grace Not Perfection

Emily Ley is a good friend of mine, so reading this book honestly felt like having a cup of coffee with her! It’s an easy read and one I think most of us can relate to! Because let’s be real, perfect is totally overrated.

The Hopefuls

I actually read this one during election season, which was fun since it’s a book on the ins and outs of campaigning, but I have to tell you that I didn’t love it. The first half of the book was fun, but the last half felt slow and honestly kind of depressing. Not my favorite.

The Regulars

I thought this book was a super interesting read, and seeing the characters walk though internal battles of stereo types kept me flipping the page. But fair warning, this book had a lot of “ear muff” moments, but I’d definitely recommend it! Smart, funny, and interesting.

Wild & Free

I know both Jess and Haley, and this book was also like a girl’s night with the two of them! And seriously, there’s nothing better than a girl’s night with those two!  I really enjoyed it, and it’s both encouraging and God filled. Highly recommend!

Scrappy Little Nobody

Last October when we went to LA, I saw Anna Kendrick speak at the Elle Women of Hollywood event, and she was even funnier in person. I enjoyed her speech, so when her book came out, I felt like I knew her! I really enjoyed reading this one and hearing all about an industry that feels both foreign and weirdly familiar at the same time. The language in the book is crude, but then again it’s Anna Kendrick, so it all seemed on brand! Also, loved hearing her backstory… celebrities are just like us and all!

Nine Women One Dress

I loved this book. LOVED it. But then again, I’m a sucker for some good ChickLit! It’s a very intertwined story line, think Love Actually. I would recommend this to just about anyone. I loved it so much I might just read it again. Just one of those feel good books.

The Singles Game

Another great read! I really enjoyed this one, the story line was good and interesting. I loved learning more about professional tennis. After reading the book, felt like I could relate to Venus and Sereena (who am I kidding the book was fiction)! Seriously, I found myself at dinner parties talking about tennis like I KNEW what I was talking about, embarrassing. Loved it and would totally recommend it!

Opening Belle

This was a smart and insightful book about women on Wall Street. I really enjoyed this read and loved knowing it was based on a true story, one I heard Reese Witherspoon is making into a movie. Also, I am a serious sucker for any Wall Street anything, I find it so fascinating! If you are a Wall Street Junkie like me you need to read the book “The Buy Side” (I’ve talked about it here before), it’s also really good.

The City Baker’s Guide to Country Living

This book was an easy breezy read. Like a magical Hallmark movie turned book. I love a good fluff read, so I was all over this one!

Gosh, this was good. It’s a modern day telling of Pride and Prejudice and I couldn’t get enough. If you go into the book knowing that the story mimics P&P then you will be in good shape. If you are like me and didn’t realize it until about half way through, you will be semi-confused. Luckily it finally dawned on me. Clearly I need to get out more.

Someday, Someday Maybe

Another Lauren Graham book and I loved it. The characters are quick and talk fast and banter back and forth. But let’s be real, this woman can really do no wrong in my book.

The Martian

This. Book. Blew. My. Mind. I read the book before I saw the movie, and whoa. Growing up in Titusville (where the Shuttle used to go off) this whole story line felt like home. My entire family on both sides worked for NASA so I felt like I really knew what they were talking about. There are parts that are painfully technical, but the story is brillant.

The Coincidence of Coconut Cake

A total beach read, and I loved every second of it. Easy to read, sweet story, all the things I look for in a good ChickLit book! Also, I find fiction baking books weirdly appealing… anyone else?

Okay, so that is it for now, it feels like a lot doesn’t it! Ha! Anyways, I’d love to know your thoughts! Have you read any of these books? What are you reading? Tell me, I’m dying to know!

Oh, and here’s whats on my nightstand right now:

Present Over Perfection

Rules of Civility: A Novel

Louder Than Words: Harness the Power of Your Authentic Voice

And lastly, I juuuuuuust signed up for Good Reads and I have no idea what I am doing, are you on it? If so, let’s be friends!

  1. Love this list, I had actually already read every book except for three, so I definitely think we have the same taste. I think you will love Present over Perfection and never look at converse the same.
I have read most of Liane Moriarty’s books, author of Big Little Lies. They are worth a read, fun beach read with a touch of mystery.
The Royal We is a great beach read. Also Make it Happen is a good read. Hope this helps! Enjoy! ❤️

    • So fun!! I love Make It Happen! Lara Casey is one of my favorite people. She’s so sweet and just as inspiring! I’m definitely adding a few new books to my list. Thank you, Tori! xx, AB

  3. Hi Ashley – I’ve been following you on social media for awhile and knew I had to comment on this post (I run a young adult book subscription box business out of Orlando!)

I have just had The War of Art recommended to me, and Talking as Fast as I Can is my book club’s pick this month.

I will definitely plan on picking up Eligible and Nine Women One Dress.

I obviously read quite a bit of young adult literature, but I honestly think you would love Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon if you haven’t already. It’s beautiful and will be a movie very soon. Also, as a fellow chick lit fan, I’d recommend anything by Sophie Kinsella. She’s hilarious!

Thanks for this lovely post, and if you’re ever at any local business women events, I’d love to meet up!

    • I’m sure you read some incredible books, Lisa! How fun that you’re based in Orlando too!! I LOVE Sophie Kinsella, and I’ll have to look into Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon! Thank you so much! xx, AB

  4. Big Little Lies, Liane Moriarty.Just in time for the HBO mini series to start in February with Nicole Kidman and Reese Whitherspoon. I have read all but two of her books and loved everyone.

    • I cannot wait to read Big Little Lies! I’m literally obsessed with Reese Witherspoon and everything she does! I need to get ready for her new series on HBO! Thanks so much, Amanda! xx, AB

    • That’s so exciting! And how cool to know the author, too?! I love Wall Street, as you know, so I’ll add “The Buy Side” to my list. Thanks so much, Shannon! xx, AB

  5. I absolutely LOVE your list!! I’ve even read a few of the books you’ve recxomended! Please take the time to read Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’easter by Lisa Patton. It’s a southern read and the author just so happens to live in Tennessee where she is a tour guide! She also has a couple more books that go along with the first! Hope you pick it out next time you’re searching for that special read.

    • Thank you so much, Abbie! I love books based in the South! I’m adding Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’easter to my list, and I’m going to check out Lisa Patton too. xx, AB

  6. Thank you for the reconditions Ashley! You should read ‘Cancel the Wedding’ and I am reading A Hundred Summers right now.
