Tips to Hosting Your Best Friendsgiving

Give me any excuse to host a party and I’m 100% on board. So when it comes to the holiday season, I am always more than ready to light candles, set the table, and send out the invites! Since college I’ve either attended or hosted a Friendsgiving dinner and it is always one of my favorite nights of the year. There’s nothing better than slowing down to celebrate friendship over homemade pie, mashed potatoes, and good champagne!

Over the years our Friendsgivings have gotten more and more sophisticated. In college we hosted them as semi-costume parties complete with the classic Pilgrims and Indians theme. Then we graduated to GIANT backyard house parties with 100+ people under twinkle lights with bonfires and red solo cups. There was fancy dinner ware like paper plate and paper towels–ha!

We are now at the dinner party stage, and I’ve got to tell you… I don’t hate it! But whether you are hosting a costume themed rager or an intimate dinner party for six, here are my five tips to making the night unforgettable! (*A bonus tip: create a google doc for yourself with tabs for each of these 5 tips and keep track of what you have, what you need, and when you plan to execute that step. This will make party hosting a little less hectic.)

5 Tips & Tricks

1. Atmosphere

Bring on the candles, flowers, and texture!!

The more candles the better. I like to mix inexpensive tea lights with prettier statement votives like these to keep the ambiance conducive for conversation. I don’t know what it is but people will stay longer at a table with candles than they will without. So don’t be afraid to stack them in! Also, whether you are picking up flowers from a shop or snipping greenery from your yard, fresh flowers in vases make a huge difference.

And, lastly, texture! Think linen napkins, table runners, etc. Their ability to add warmth and comfort to a space is amazing. This jute table runner is absolutely stunning and makes the dinner tables to much more interesting and inviting!

Table & Chairs

On the table, I should say that Ryan and I have never been able to agree on a dining room table we liked, but we LOVE this one. It’s part of the Home Decorators Collection at The Home Depot – The quality is amazing and it’s over a foot longer than our previous dining room table (93″ total), which makes a huge difference! It’s also on sale and such a great find! I love that we can add few more people to the guest list, thanks to this table.

The chairs are also part of the Home Decorators Collection, come in sets of two, and really compliment the table!

2. Great Food

This one is a given. Great food is always a must. I love to do a mix of my favorite recipes like this Maple Roasted Carrot recipe and a roasted whole chicken (I like it better than cooked turkey and gravy!), along with side dishes our friends plan to bring. It’s a misconception that the host has to prepare everything. It’s a great way to take a little of the cooking stress off, but still be able to share your holiday favorites! You can also use your slow cooker or instant pot to keep dishes warm or to cut down on cooking time for some of your favorite recipes.

If you are anything like us, you may have a few food allergies to contend with and I have a great post with gluten free and dairy free recipes perfect for a holiday friendsgiving or Thanksgiving. It includes appetizers, side dishes, and entrees, so you will find a little bit of everything!

Also, good quality cookware is a must! I often find myself in a pinch and will just pick up a baking sheet at the grocery store on my rush to finish up a meal, but I’ve learned that getting quality cookware like this baking set and this Tramontina dutch oven will literally pay for themselves after the first meal!

Let me just rant about this bakeware set for a minute. It’s a 10 piece OXO set from The Home Depot and is literally worth its weight in gold! I’ve used at least one of these pieces EVERY DAY since I got the set two weeks ago. It’s a great purchase as we head into cooking/baking/entertaining heavy holidays!

3. Great Playlist

Great music makes any gathering feel alive and upbeat. That being the case, finding the right playlist can be a struggle. I love music, but I never knew what to play at parties until I found the playlist on Spotify called Nancy Meyers’ Kitchen. Guys, no joke, it may be the best playlist on the planet.

Seriously can not say enough good things about this one. It’s an entertaining game changer!

4. Fun & Fancy Cocktails

I’m always a yes to a fun and fancy cocktail, especially at a dinner party, but if you are running low on time, break out a couple of bottles of champagne, and toss in a few cranberries and a sprig of rosemary…And voila – it’s cocktail hour!

Also, I love this pretty bee glassware that can be used for anything from wine to water! Of course, both are needed at Friendsgiving or traditional Thanksgiving dinner, so I used the taller glass for wine and the tumbler for water. Each come in sets of 6 from The Home Depot and are such a great way to elevate your entertaining!

5. Prep the Coffee

Last, but certainly not least COFFEE. I love an after dinner cup of coffee. Once dinner is cleared and the conversation and candles are still going, there is nothing better than a hot cup of coffee (regular or decaf)!

Growing up, my parents hosted a lot of parties and we’d always pre-brew the coffee and have it in carafes ready to go. And now I do the same. The trick is to have the right carafes. It makes all the difference in the world! These are my go-to. They keep the coffee hot and FRESH for 12 hours! Like the bakeware set, these pay off big time. You can look around, but I have found that The Home Depot has the best price point on the Alfi Carafe.

I also always offer espresso with our Nespresso maker. It goes without saying that Ryan and I use this every single day. It give guests an option, because sometimes all you need is a shot or two!

That’s two easy ways to serve without a lot of mid-party disruption 😉

That’s It — Now Bring on Friendsgiving!

I hope these tips inspire you this year towards hosting your very own Friendsgiving or Thanksgiving! We are hosting both this year and excited to put all these pieces pieces to work. If you haven’t checked out The Home Depot’s decor section, you absolutely should. They have everything needed to throw a spectacular dinner party this holiday season!

P.S. I’m sharing more of my favorite tips over on The Home Depot’s blog, so hope over and check it out!
