Light-hearted for sure! I cannot do traditional thrillers because they keep me up at night haha. I listened to this book and thought the narrators did a great job at keeping the heavy parts of the story lighter with their portrayals. I’m 100% a romance reader so this sort of story is typically out of my TBR list.

I was very surprised about how Vero kept the debt a secret from Finlay. I think Vero didn’t want to disappoint Finlay so she kept it a secret as long as she could. Finlay showed Vero the importance of their partnership by forgiving her for her gambling debts and helping them to move on from their misfortunes together as a team.

I think Nick is a better fit for Finlay. Julian was a “good for a fun time” sort of relationship however Nick seems to fit better into Finlay and her children’s lives.

  2. 1. I loved both of these books! I was reading them so quickly, that I was sad when it was over. They were a perfect mix of mystery, a little suspense, humor and light hardheartedness. I am excited for the next two books!

    2. I was very surprised Vero was keeping secrets from Finley. They have been through so much together and always have each others backs. Finley would do anything for Vero to help her and figure out any situation together, she thinks of her as one of the family.

    3. I have always liked Nick, though once finishing the second book was starting to wonder if he might be the cop of the website that the computer hacker (Cam?) was warning her about. I’m hoping it doesn’t end up being him, but that would definitely be a twist!

  3. 1. Totally prefer light hearted!! Love that Finlay is more funny than dark. The characters are more quickly than twisted.

    2. Sad that she was secretive. Vero was probably embarrassed, but it was dishonest & disappointing.

    3. Team Nick!! Julian just not mature enough, but helps make a fun storyline. Hope there are one or two or ten more Finlay stories!!

  4. 1. I love how this is a genre bender. Mystery with comedy and romance mixed in. And Elle Cosimano has signed on for 2 more books in the series! Another similar, recent read is Dial A For Aunties by Jesse Q Sutanto.

    2. Finlay and Vero’s relationship is so great. I think it shows how women can support each other. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t secrets. Maybe Vero is ashamed of her past and mistakes.

    3. Team Nick! But I think Finlay is choosing herself over men right now.

  5. 1. I LOVE this series! It reminds me of the Stephanie Plum series from Janet Evanovich which is also great. I typically can’t do thriller but this makes it fun?

    2. I was so disappointed in Vero! I guess it makes sense because Finlay’s ingenuity a lot of times comes from not having access to lots of money. I’ll be curious to see how they work through this.

    3. I’m team Nick but I’m not sure how it will work between them! The twist at the end of him asking questions makes me wonder if he knows a lot more than he lets on and he is able to keep it separate. (Again kind of like the Stephanie plum novels)

I’m so excited for the next book and hope it’s a 4 part series like the comment above says!

  6. 1. I love this specific niche of crime/thriller + romantic comedy. I haven’t read anything like it but love it dearly! Elle creates the perfect blend of all the elements for a very enjoyable read!

    2. For as upfront as Vero is about some things, I was surprised that she hid so much. I think this provides for even more growth for Fin and Vero together and for Vero individually, they survive the worst *together*.

    3. Ok I’ve always been Team Nick- I did appreciate how she felt with Julian originally and understood keeping Nick at lengths- but throughout this book she grappled with the differences and life stages they were in, and Nick shows up for her kids which is so good for Fin. I still don’t know how they would work with the whole “this murder influences my novels” aspect BUT I really do enjoy their scenes together. 😉

  7. 1. This is honestly the *only* thriller I have loved! I want Elle to write a million more books!! ha!

    2. I was actually really surprised that Vero kept such a big secret from Finlay, especially given their relationship. But I think it is a testament to just how much Vero values Finaly’s friendship. I love their relationship.

    3. Ugh. I *love* Nick!!

  8. 1. I agree!! This feels unique in the dark humor, crime thriller genre, a bit like Good Girls the TV show. I’ve never read a book like it!

    2. It disappointed me that Vero felt she had to hide so much. They’re committing literal (accidental) murders together but she’s still lying to Finlay. It points to deep trauma and I do hope they can both grow through it.

    3. I’ve been a fan of both men the whole time, but Julian makes Finlay feel unsure and not confident. Even if it’s not Julian’s fault, there’s something to be said about feeling assured in your relationship like she does with Nick!

    • 1) I absolutely LOVE this series. I love a good murder mystery/suspenseful thriller in the form of documentaries, books, movies, and TV shows. However, I really really enjoy the light hearted take on a who done it plot. It is still a fun page turner and a best to both worlds (murder mystery + romantic comedy)!! I picked a book for my old book club that was super cute and a similar genre “Party Girls Die In Pearls”. I agree I hope Elle writes several more books and it becomes a binge worthy series!

      2) I was shocked that Vero didn’t come clean sooner given all they have been through. It’s clear they are closer to each other than they are to their own family members. As someone that struggles with budgeting and is a shopaholic that uses shopping as a cure all, I understand how hard it is to tell my most trusted family and friends about my financial struggles. It can be such an emotionally charged subject.

      3) Nick was the easy, convenient, safe, steady, mature choice which is what you do when you are a single mom with young children. As a one time single mom in the dating world my first leap back in was with a younger (only 3 year age difference lol) very cute guy that was just fun and it honestly was a big confidence booster that helped me rebound from a hurtful break up. Happy Finlay got both men in her life post hurtful break up to heal!

Can’t wait for the third book!!

  9. 1. One of my favorite things about this book is how the tone and vibe is totally different from most books in the mystery/thriller genre. Do you prefer this light-hearted take or more traditional thrillers? Are there any similar books you’ve loved?

One of the reasons I love the Finlay series so much is because it is unique in the genre. I do enjoy legal thrillers (think John Grisham and James Patterson) but these are so fun because they’re different. I don’t prefer one over the other, but like both depending on my mood.

    2. Finlay and Vero’s relationship is, in my mind, the cornerstone of the book. Were you surprised to learn how much Vero was keeping from Finlay? Why do you think Vero went to such lengths to keep her secrets?

I was surprised and a little bit disappointed. As a mom, it would make me nervous to find out the person I trusted implicitly with my children had been hiding so much about herself. I think I would begin to wonder what else she was hiding if she wasn’t forthcoming with me once given the opportunity. I would hope their friendship would survive an honest discussion and never really understood why Vero went to such lengths to hide her real identity or her financial situation.

    3. By the end of the novel, it seems Finlay has chosen Nick over Julian. What are your thoughts?
I agree…I think Finlay sees how Nick is with her children and is mature enough to realize that both for her sake and Julian’s, they both need someone different in their life longterm.

I found an interview with the author which hinted Finlay will be a 4 part series and I hope that’s the case because I love this character!
