DIY Baby Dress Sewing Pattern

The Cutest Thing I’ve Ever Made

As soon as I found out my sister was pregnant with a girl I instantly wanted to make something special for her. We are a very sentimental family and my soon-to-be niece’s closet is already filled with baby clothes my mom made and saved for my sister and me.

So I thought it would be sweet and special to sew a pretty little dress for my niece (and matching scrunchie for Kyla, mommy-and-me style!) that she could eventually hand down to her little ones. I really wanted her to have something super special from me that I could give to her at her baby shower.

After doing some research I found the sewing blog called “Melly Sews” with tons of cute patterns and instructions. I’m not necessarily new to sewing but, truth be told, it has been a while since I have taken on such a serious project like this one. When I found Melly’s post, watched her video, I figured I’d give it a whirl.

Fabric & Buttons

I ordered this fabric (and this lining) from my favorite Etsy shop along with these vintage pearl floral buttons! And as soon as everything came in, I got to work.

The dress was relatively easy to sew. I only had one moment where I thought I was seriously going to toss my sewing machine out the window and be done with it. But Carly Face-timed me and walked me through my issue before I destroyed our sewing machine in a fit of rage, ha!

Anyway, I am so glad I ended up doing this for Kyla. When she opened the box she BURST into the happiest tears, which made all the sweat, pin pricks, and sewing related meltdowns worth it! 😉 But in all seriousness, this dress and pattern was a great project, and now that I know how to make it I think I can FLY through the next one! So don’t let me discourage you from trying, because now I’m addicted! So fun and satisfying!

If you are looking for a fun new craft challenge, make it this.
