More Purpose, More Peace

A few weeks ago I listened to this episode of Sazan and Stevie’s Podcast, The Good Life. Ryan and I briefly met them in Miami on a press trip a few years back and I love keeping up with their lives on Instagram!

I’m a terrible podcast listener and often forget to turn them on because I’m usually listening to an audio book. But I had just finished a book and was running errands when I saw Sazan post about their latest episode with Jim Kwik. The name Jim Kwik was familiar to me but I wasn’t sure why… so it peeked my interest enough to swipe up and give it a listen.

Half way through the podcast I texted Ryan the link. I came home later ranting and raving about this podcast that had so many great life tips. Ryan and I stopped right there and gave it a re-listen together. Ever since then I’ve had a few quotes  from the episode that stuck in my head and I thought I’d share them with you here.

Principle #1: Do the Hard Things First

The thing Jim Kwik said that made the biggest impact on me was this:

Do the hardest thing first. When you do the hard things your becomes life is easy. When you do the easy things first and procrastinate with the hard, life becomes hard.”

*Ok, that’s completely paraphrased, but that’s the gist of it!* I love this quote and this way of thinking. It’s such a simple truth and probably something you already knew instinctively. But I love how he said it and it’s stuck.

I’ll be the first to admit that I love knocking off the easiest things on my to-do list first because I love the feeling of crossing things off my list. But by the time 8:30 p.m. rolls around and I still haven’t done the one thing that’s been haunting me, the whole day turns from great to frustrating in an instant and I wish I’d prioritized better. This is why so many times we don’t reach our goals. We let “busy” get in the way of “purpose”. This quote has me re-thinking everything.

Principle #2: How You Do Anything…

The other thing he said that I thought was spot on was this:

“The way you do anything is the way you do everything.”

Gosh, is that not the truth?! If this doesn’t put things into perspective, I don’t know what does.

I want to be a person who’s known for kindness, integrity, and light, but if I don’t put those things into practice on the small things, they won’t transfer to the bigger things. I’m keeping this quote tucked away for the next time I’m tempted to cut corners, talk sharply, or compromising a core belief. The truth is what we do when no one is watching or the stakes feel low is probably they same thing we’ll do when it really counts, so let’s make everything we do count!

Such good reminders on keeping our hearts and minds on the right track. It’s so easy to get into the habit of putting off the hard and doing things halfway, but if you commit fully to whatever the task at hand, things often times get easier and, well, more joyful.

What hard things are you going to do today?
