Happy Place by Emily Henry

Closing the book on May…

This just felt like the perfect book for May, didn’t it?! I was craving summer when I started Happy Place and it just felt like the best book to kick off the season. Plus I lived vicariously through the characters and their northeast getaway… honestly, I’m currently Googling flights now. Truly, there’s nothing quite like a summer up north with a sweater thrown over your shoulders!

Mitchell’s Book Corner in Nantucket, MA

I’m so excited to hear what you thought of the book! I loved Emily Henry’s two other novels Beach Read and People We Meet On Vacation, and Happy Place felt like a quintessential Emily Henry story… fun and full of heart, while examining the complexities of relationships. The best kind of summer read!

Even when something beautiful breaks, the making of it still matters.” — Happy Place

Discussion Questions

I really loved the different dynamics in this story! Below are a few questions I was thinking about when reading… feel free to answer in the comments below, over on the Ashley Brooke Book Club Instagram, or with your IRL bookish friends.

1. Did the dual timeline of past and present enhance or hinder your take on the story? Did you find yourself more invested in one over the other?

2. This story featured a fun and dynamic supporting cast of characters. Did any of the friends surprise you in the end? Also, which character could you relate to most and why?

3. Do you have a happy place? Is it a place or with a person? Or maybe both!

Next month’s read is so fun! We loved the author’s last novel about a very lovable divorcee (hint: it was an ABBC pick), so we are thrilled to read her newest release! Any guesses?

As for books with a similar Happy Place vibe, may we suggest: The Most Likely Club by Elyssa Friedland, Flying Solo by Linda Holmes, and The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon.

  1. 1. Did the dual timeline of past and present enhance or hinder your take on the story? Did you find yourself more invested in one over the other?

I read a lot of books that have parallel timelines from different eras so it didn’t bother me. I did love their college backstory.

    2. This story featured a fun and dynamic supporting cast of characters. Did any of the friends surprise you in the end? Also, which character could you relate to most and why?
I thought their dynamic was really sweet as an entire friend group and I was glad they worked it out in the end. I could definitely relate to the people pleaser in Harriet.

    3. Do you have a happy place? Is it a place or with a person? Or maybe both!
My happy place is the beach with my people so a combo of both
