My Low-Bun Hair Tutorial

An easy and elegant way to wear your hair up…

I’ve been wanting to pull this post together for ages… and I’m finally doing it! Just in time for holiday season, the low-bun hairstyle is the perfect easy way to wear your hair up. This really is such a simple hair look, but feels elevated and elegant at the same time. Honestly, it’s a great way to get your hair out of your face without it looking intentional!

Also, I’ll never not think of Lily van der Woodson (the mom from Gossip Girl!) when I wear my hair like this… my forever style icon. She knew what she was doing, you really can go from running errand to a black tie event with this hair, and honestly, isn’t that what we all need in our life?

Anyway, I’m breaking the whole *SUPER* easy low-bun hair tutorial down for you today. It’s so simple you’ll be tempted to wear your hair like this every day!

Also here’s a quick reel from a few years ago so you can see me creating the low-bun hairstyle in action with longer hair! I filmed this before I cut my hair, so it will be most helpful to my longer-hair gals.

P.S. Here are a few other fun hair posts… my very favorite hair accessory, how I style my short hair, my favorite hair hot tools, and how I curl my (longer) hair.

My Low-Bun Hair Products

Many of these are my tried-and-true that I’ve been using for years.

Dry shampoo – The only one I use.

Dry texture spray – A must for me to prep my hair.

Hair spray – This has been my favorite since college.

Shampoo & conditioner – A really great duo for fine hair!

Blonde bobby pins & clear elastics bands – The only tools you need for this look!

Step-by-step low-bun hair tutorial
Gather hair into ponytail.
Using a clear elastic band to do so!
Pull hair completely through one time and then only halfway through the second time.
You’ll want it to look like this!
Then grab your favorite hairspray, this is mine!
And generously spray your half-pulled through bun.
Once the hair spray has dried, fan out your loop of hair into a bun.
Use bobby pins to pin it into place.
Keep pinning until secure!
Then take your fingers and pull the bun “out” a bit to rough it up… we don’t want it too perfect!
The perfect imperfect bun!

You’ll have to let me know if you try it out… good luck and happy pinning!
