Creating a Legacy
Over this past year for many reasons I would wake up in the middle of the night panicked that Ryan and I didn’t have photo albums documenting our years together. It would literally keep me up at night. What If my computer crashed?! What if my backups didn’t save? The what ifs plagued me.
I really felt like we needed to document our life on paper, not just on the blog or instagram. We needed something tangible and lasting.
Growing up my parents were seriously on top of their photo album game. And flipping through them is by far one of my favorite things to do when going home. We’d giggle at the sight of my mom in crop tops and daisy duke shorts or my dad with long blonde hair and a lifted truck! Those were to days! Then we’d move onto copious amounts of chubby baby photos of my sister and I, then of course to family vacations, and everything in between. Our lives, every bit of them, are documented. And I wanted that so badly for us.

I feared if I let even one more year go by it would be too difficult to go back and do them all. So I set a cut-off date for myself and we committed to having ALL 6 years of mine and Ryan’s life together compiled into albums. From our year of dating to our last 5 married years, all of it. And y’all, we did it. I’m not going to lie, it was a labor of love, but oh my gosh, what a treasure.
We decided to go with Artifact Uprising for our albums and I am so thankful we did. Putting together the albums was the easiest part – it was tracking down and choosing all of the photos that was difficult! But AU’s system is so intuitive and easy to use, plus I just loved the way their books look. Simple, beautiful, and special.
After much consideration, we decided on the 10×10 size layflat albums with gold foil lettering and superfine paper. And let me tell you, it was the RIGHT decision. When the books came in yesterday both Ryan and I gasped! I’ve heard my friend Emily Ley talk about these books for years, and I’m so glad I finally made it happen for our family as well.

We created one book for each year, filling them to the brim with our favorite memories, trips, silly moments, achievements, and of course our latest feat, beating cancer. I will cherish these books forever and I can’t wait for the day when we get to sit down with our kids and flip though these memories with them.
My plan is to make an album for every year going forward and one day have an entire bookshelf filled top to bottom with memories of the good, the sweet, the hard, and the precious. A life well lived.

Congrats on your albums – they look beautiful! I have the same goal and need to set a deadline for myself to get them started (and completed)! Curious to know if you had criteria or loose guidelines for selecting photos to include. I find the processes of selection and narrowing down to a reasonable collection the most challenging. And, as a follow-up, have you created a system for identifying photos for the annual “best of” albums throughout the year?
Honestly, I have ZERO system. I need to get one, ha! I like to at least hit all of trips, holidays, etc. But if you find a system, let me know!
Hey Ashley! I’ve been eyeing these albums for a long time – Do you like that you chose all different colors for the year books?
Toby, yes! I love it! Just so fun and colorful!
Ashley, the albums look beautiful– did you purposely not put in text to tell the story? Or does AU not offer that option?
We put text on almost every page! If you look closely you can see it! Love that AU has that option!
I love Artifact albums. I made one for my in laws for our wedding last year and have been putting off our wedding album. This is a great reminder. I need to be better at having paper documents and reminders of moments together.
Venice! I love that! They really make the best gifts! xx
These are nice! How did you decide what company to go with? What was your criteria for the decision?
I have LOVED Artifact Uprising for years and have been using them for our Christmas cards for a long time. Also, the just ease of use really did it for me! Plus, they are PRETTY!!!
