Perfecting the Look

Sponsored by L’Oreal Paris

Let me start by saying that applying eyeliner is not easy, so if you struggle please don’t think you’re the only one. For the Cat Eye look, drawing two perfectly symmetrical winged lines and then making your lashes look long and thick can be difficult and definitely takes practice.

But over the years I have perfected a system that works for me (thank goodness!). A look that used to take me all morning I can now do in minutes! And I’m going to show you how to do it too! Honestly, all you need are the right tools, a little bit of practice, and girl, you got this! I pinky promise.

Also, the BEST thing about this look is that you can pick up every single tool I use at the drug store or grocery store. I know, it’s magical. So ladies, get out your pen and paper, because you need to WRITE THIS DOWN.

Step 1.

Choose the right Eyeliner, and save it for last.

Finding the right eyeliner is also not easy. Personally, I use Superstar Liquid Eyeliner. This stuff REALLY works. It’s not too runny, too dry, or too smudge-y… all things that are extra important in a liquid eyeliner.

So here’s the deal, I leave the “finishing” of my eyes last, meaning I have already put on my foundation, bronzer, blush, eyeshadow, and lightly penciled in my brows. The liner and lashes I put on last.

When putting on liquid eyeliner, keep these tips in mind:

  1. Dramatic is good. Don’t let the boldness of the liner freak you out! You are allowed to be bold!
  2. Start in the middle of your eye. I have found that this works best for me. I start in the middle and draw the winged portion first, then I go back and fill it in and line the rest of my eye.
  3. Keep your brows in mind. I like to keep the tip of my wing parallel to the end of my brow.
  4. Try, try, try again! That’s what eye make-up remover and pointy q-tips are for. Also, no one gets it just perfect! I always take my concealer brush and clean up the lines after I’m done. So you can too!

Below is a step-by-step diagram of my process. Screen shot this and keep it for when you try this out later! Hopefully it will be helpful and not creepy that you have a large photo of my eye on your camera roll, ha!

The right beauty tools make a big difference:

Step 2.

Curl those lashes!

Phew! You did it! Okay, so after you have successfully lined both eyes, it’s now time to move on to those lashes. But before you apply mascara, you are not allowed to pass go without curling them first! Seriously, people, USE A LASH CURLER. Do not make me tell you again. 😉

Step 3.

Lash Primer

Okay, now that you’ve curled your lashes it’s time to prime! I have started using L’Oreal’s Voluminous Lash Primer and I love it. But careful, you can accidentally apply too much. So make sure that it’s only a light coat. The primer will bulk up your lashes (which is a good thing!) but too much will make your lashes look grainy. So keep it simple with one coat and you’ll be fine!

Step 4.

Lastly, finish your lashes off with a few coats of L’Oreal’s Voluminous Mascara.  I like to put on a good 2-3 coats and let it set. Then put on one more, just so my lashes REALLY pop. Because, honestly, we are not going for subtle here… so go for it! The more the better!

That’s it friends! Can you believe it?! Four easy steps and you have perfected the cat eye.

Okay, now it’s your turn. Try it out and let me know how it goes! Honestly, I’m dying to hear all about it!

  1. Hi! These are the best tips! I was also wondering where you got that black and white tassel necklace in one of your photos? I’m in LOVE!

  2. Thanks so much for this Ashley! I am dying to create winged eyes but have *never* successfully applied liner before. Wish me luck! ☺️
