Time Blocking Cube
The Best Desk Accessory
I’ve always been a fan of time blocking. I think it truly does wonders for your day. Growing up, my mom was seriously into it. I felt like every task was time blocked to make it more fun/efficient… and bonus for her… that usually entailed less whining. ha!
Almost every evening she’d set a 15 minute timer on the stove for a quick “set up for success”. Which meant: lay out our clothes for the next day and pack up our backpacks/lunch boxes. It wasn’t something we *loved” doing but the timer made it feel almost like a game. And, well, it worked. We always got it done!
I took this habit into adulthood and have been doing it ever since. But at the end of last year I was feeling quite frazzled, like, all the time, and very unfocused… which is not a feeling I enjoy.
Every time I would set a timer on my phone for a task I’d inevitably get sucked into returning DMs or text messages, etc. I’d look up and the 20 minutes I had slotted for the task I was *trying* to time block was *poof* GONE. Then, of course, I’d get so frustrated at myself for my lack of discipline. Trust me I have a lot of grace for myself, and I am far from a perfectionist, but man… this would really get under my skin.
So I decided to go back to the basics. TIME. BLOCKING. The old school way.
I realize the issue may not be my lack of discipline, but my phone… and I was RIGHT. If I had to set a timer on my phone to make it happen, forget it, I’d get sucked into anything and everything. But an actual timer was exactly what I needed.
I’ve had this time block cube in my amazon cart since like, 2018 I think! I FINALLY ordered it and, WOW, am I glad I did.
There is something to be said about seeing a timer and realizing that, yes, I *can* do that task for 60 minutes completely focused, and heck, I might even get it done in less!!
Time Block Cube
What I can say for certain is that I’ve been more focused and have crossed more tasks off my to-do list in the last 10 days since using the time block cube than I have in a long time. It feels really good.
Do I still check my phone throughout the day at my desk? YES! Of course I do… but I now give myself some parameters! Like 60 minutes to get through my inbox, and then 15 minutes returning DMs, then 60 minutes to write a blog post, etc. It’s been such a day changer!
I’m not super strict about it, and everything isn’t down to the second, but it really is helping me take back control of my minutes and forcing me to exercise that focus muscle that desperately needed some strengthening!
Anyway, if you are anything like me, fingers crossed this little $14 Amazon product will help you as much as it has helped me.
